Client Overview

A precision parts manufacturer in the southwest united states, specializing in custom-machined components for the aerospace and defense industries with approximately 150 employees was having challenges managing supplier performance.  The company operates a single facility that produces high-tolerance parts requiring tight supply chain coordination, sources raw materials, tooling, and sub-assemblies from more than 35 suppliers across the U.S. and Mexico – Supplier lead-times and deliveries were becoming more variable and nagging quality defects were impacting operations.  However, they realized that to even begin, they needed to get a better handle on their data to understand where the root causes were and what actions they could take. They engaged Lasso to help devise a solution to better manage their company data, including their supplier performance data.

Business Challenge

The company was plagued by unpredictable lead times and high defects because they lacked a centralized way to monitor supplier performance, they faced two major hurdles:

  • The “Safety Stock” Trap: To hedge against late deliveries, they maintained an excessive inventory buffer, tying up significant working capital and affecting their ability to make other investments in their business.

  • Reactive Procurement: The team only discovered supplier issues after production had already stalled or defective parts reached the assembly line.

  • Information Silos: Data regarding quality, shipping, and pricing lived in separate spreadsheets, making it impossible to see the “big picture” of vendor reliability.

Solution

Lasso implemented a unified data lakehouse to centralize their data storage, processing, reporting, and visualization.  The data lakehouse also enabled them to turn fragmented data into actionable negotiation power. The solution included:

  • The Unified Data Lakehouse: Lasso integrated data from the company’s ERP, external logistics providers, and manual quality-check logs into a single source of truth.

  • Automated Vendor Scorecards: A dynamic dashboard was created to rank suppliers based on a weighted index of On-Time Delivery (OTD), Quality Yield, and Lead-Time Variability.

  • Predictive Risk Modeling: Using historical data, Lasso built and deployed a model to identify “At-Risk” shipments. If a supplier showed a pattern of micro-delays (2–3 days) over a month, the system flagged them for potential bulk failure before it impacted production.

  • Corrective Action Workflows: An automated trigger was set up so that when a vendor’s score fell below a specific threshold, a “Corrective Action Request” was auto-generated with the supporting data attached, streamlining the communication between procurement and the vendor.

Outcomes

Lasso’s supplier performance analytics solution delivered measurable operational, financial, and strategic benefits for the manufacturer, including:

Improved Working Capital: Better visibility into supplier lead times and reliability allowed the company to reduce excess inventory without risking production delays, freeing up cash and optimizing working capital.

Higher On-Time Delivery: With proactive monitoring and early alerts, supplier deliveries became more predictable, minimizing production downtime and ensuring customer orders were fulfilled on schedule.

Better Quality: Standardized performance metrics and real-time reporting enabled suppliers to address quality issues quickly, reducing defects, rework, and scrap, while improving the consistency of finished products.

Enhanced Strategic Decision-Making: Data-driven insights gave leadership the confidence to prioritize supplier development, identify high-risk suppliers, and make sourcing decisions that aligned with long-term business objectives.

Stronger Supplier Relationships: Transparent performance scorecards and collaborative review processes fostered trust, accountability, and ongoing improvement, transforming suppliers from transactional vendors into strategic partners.

These outcomes collectively strengthened the manufacturer’s supply chain, lowered operational risk, improved profitability, and positioned the company for scalable growth
